Going to Barbados

When I was a teenager, there was a popular song which went something like “woah I’m going to Barbados, in the sunny Caribbean Sea“. That song really talked to me, ever since I have had an obsession with visiting that island. Eventually, circumstances made that dream become a possibility, and then a reality and the trip was on.

Getting to Barbados

It’s not easy to reach the Caribbean from Cape Town, our route took us from Cape Town to Dubai, then to London, for a 2 day shopping and sightseeing stopover, and finally to Bridgetown, Barbados after something like 36 hours in the air.

Beautiful Caribbean Beaches

I have to say, I wasn’t disappointed, Barbados is everything I expected and then some. The most awesome beaches, lively night life, friendly people (except at airport immigration), beautiful climate, cold beer, and I could go on and on. But Barbados is about beaches and these must be some of the very best in the world.

Happy Hour in Barbados

Happy Hour Island

Barbados is not cheap, no definitely not cheap, especially on a South African Rand budget, but reasonably priced restaurants can be found. Most pubs have “happy hour” between 5 and 7 or so in the evening with 2 drinks for the price of 1. We were fortunate that the beach bar at our hotel had happy hour from 5 to 6, and the pub across the road had it from 6 to 7, so we were able to stretch our beer budget a bit. Bajans like their food spicy, which works for me, the choice of food was incredible and of a really high standard, surprising for a place that’s geared for tourists.

Deep Sea Fishing

Being the popular tourist destination that it is, especially with British and USA visitors, there is plenty to keep you occupied in Barbados when the beach becomes boring. The Caribbean Sea has world class big game fishing, although the Marlin didn’t co-operate on this occasion, but we did manage a decent Barracuda. Descending 150 feet below the surface in a submarine and checking out a wreck is a pretty awesome experience.

Bridgetown

Believe it or not, there is more to Barbados than beaches and rum punch. Bridgetown is a small city with a mix of modern and traditional, all the big name brands are represented, alongside mom and pop street food stalls, it’s a city with an amazing vibe about it.

Interior and West Coast

The interior of the island is fairly rural with rolling hills and green fields, and, while the original tropical jungle has all but disappeared, those sections that are left are truly beautiful. The Eastern side of the island, which faces the open ocean is somewhat more “wild” than the touristy Southern and Western sides, with some awesome scenery and secluded beaches.
