Mauritius Grand Baie

Mauritius seems to have become a kind of default destination to celebrate anniversaries for us, this trip was a week spent at the Paradise Cove Hotel in the North near Grand Baie, to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Direct Flight Cape Town to Mauritius

One of the great things about Mauritius is it’s accessibility, a 5 hour flight on Air Mauritius, direct from Cape Town is all it takes.

We stayed at the Paradise Cove Hotel on the North West tip of the island, a short distance from Grand Baie. The hotel is for guests aged 12 and up, so it’s really a couples kind of place. It’s small compared to some of the large resorts on the island, with excellent food and really comfortable rooms, all very private and intimate.

Excellent Cuisine

Unlike most resorts, meals aren’t done buffet style here, the menu changes daily with a choice of starters, main course and desserts. We found it a bit hit and miss, with outstanding fare one day and so so the next. But overall it was pretty good and the waiting staff really friendly and eager to please.

Hiring a car is a must if you want to see the rest of the island. Taxi’s are available but they are quite expensive and the drivers not always keen to go off the main tourist routes. Port Louis is apparently the wealthiest city in Africa (even if it’s not actually “in” Africa) with a thoroughly modern feel. The waterfront is worth a visit if only for the vast variety of foods available.

Grand Baie is also worth spending a few hours, loads of pubs, restaurants (rather expensive) and shops. There is also a large mall just outside the town with all the familiar big name brand shops and restaurant chains that can be found in any mall back home in South Africa, if that’s your preference. We chose to avoid it though.
